Wheels to Work - Early Day Motion

Stephen Pound, you know, the guy from Ealing North who voted to ban hunting, go to war in Iraq, introduce ID cards and student top up fees. The one who according to The Daily Mail, claimed fuel expenses between his constituency and Parliament which equated to 3 return trips for everyday he was at work, yet was lucky enough to be re-elected in May. Well, on 19 July 2010 he tabled an Early Day Motion (no 533) entitled 'WHEELS TO WORK SCHEME' and if enough MPs to sign it, it could be debated in Parliament. Basically, it enables youngsters to become independently mobile for either work or college, especially where poor public transport provision prohibits this. MAG (Motorcycle Action Group) suggests that 'the young are essential to the survival of motorcycling and on today's congested roads they should be encouraged to consider something greener than a car.'

The EDM states - "That this House notes the moped loan scheme for young people known as Wheels to Work which has traditionally received cross-party support; further notes that in the current economic climate it is more important than ever that young people have access to employment, education and training opportunities; further notes that the low cost of providing small motorcycles to jobseekers can more than offset the cost to the Exchequer of leaving young people economically inactive and claiming benefits; and calls for the Government to actively consider how it can facilitate and support individual Wheels to Work scheme efforts to gain stable funding, so enabling them to continue to provide this invaluable and cost-effective service."
