Blood Runners - A cri de coeur from Richard Hurst

SERV (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers) is a voluntary organisation that provides a quick and reliable means of transporting emergency blood and blood products to hospitals and medical facilities at night. The charity was originally set up in 1981 in Surrey and now covers most of the South East. During 2008, it is hoped that their operations will extend to Warwickshire and Coventry but this is dependant upon recruiting volunteer riders and a coordinator to drive it forward. Unfortunately Richard is unable to undertake the coordinator role because he insists that he sets aside a few hours in every 24 for sleep but he is eager to find a suitable candidate in his stead.

The tasks of a coordinator involve recruiting new members, attracting sponsors and enrolling new hospitals into the scheme. The person doing this will, at all times, be fully supported both by Dave Sammonds, the National Development Officer for SERV and other local groups. Dave says that it all sounds harder than really it is and that members of the Northamptonshire branch are eager to offer a huge amount of support and guidance.

This is a real opportunity to perform a useful and worthwhile service for the community. If you are interested in volunteering and would like more information please contact Dave Sammonds on 07017 030504 or e mail at development@serv.org.uk .
