It is a fact that bikers who have passed
the Advanced Test are 75% less likely to be involved in a road traffic
accident. Who can argue with that.
The Advanced Test is available to
all motorcyclists, providing they hold a current driving licence and have
fewer than 8 penalty points (fewer than 3 points if they have been riding
for less than 2 years) at the time of taking the test. There is no upper age limit.
You may
start the programme, preparing for the Advanced Test with CWAM, 3
months after passing your Motorcycle Test.
Your motorcycle must have sufficient power
to sustain the national speed limit where allowed.
No, if you wish you may take the IAM
Test direct without joining an lAM Group. At least one current CWAM member
successfully took this route. It should be noted however that the pass rate is lower
using this route and you miss out on all the social benefits. Contact IAM Head Office direct to discuss
this option.
Come along for a free assessment ride
without obligation and find out. See if you like us and what we have
to offer. Have a look at the How
to Join page and contact the Membership Secretary.
Take a look at
Improving
your skills but remember that as with all CWAM things, somebody will
always be on hand to advise
you.
No, there are no time pressures and you
learn at your own pace. A lot will depend upon how much riding practice
you are able to carry out between the observed rides and your own commitment. You
will not be advised to apply for the test until CWAM
believe you are above the required standard.
You will be required to ride within the law
during your test. Speed limits are legal requirements, so you will have to
adhere to them. That said, you would not be failed for minor infractions,
especially if you catch yourself and tell the examiner you are aware of
having gone too fast. Bear in mind, however, that a speed limit is only a
limit; it does not mean that it is always safe to go at that speed.
Speed limits have become a national
obsession, in becoming an advanced rider, you will learn
techniques that allow you to make progress without speeding. Once you
accept riding within or close to limits, you will be surprised how much
more relaxed you can be without the worry of being flashed by a Speed
Camera or pulled over by a Police Patrol.
CWAM holds two main types of social events,
those based around biking such as the Ride
Out Days which are open to full and associate members (depending on
the grade of ride) and Club
Nights to which members and all those who share our common interests (including
wives, partners, family, friends and especially those thinking of joining
the group) are welcomed.
If you don't ride but are really keen to
join us regularly, we have a special 'Friend's Membership' just for you.
