IAM Rider Skills Day – Mallory Park – 2009 Format

from John Lickley

Drawing on the experience we have gained through 2007 and 2008 we are making some adjustments to the package for 2009. The aims of everyone involved in the organisation of the events and delivery of the on-circuit instruction remain unchanged – namely:

  1. To deliver quality instruction aimed at improving the road riding skills of the paying customers
  2. To deliver the above in a safe environment and manner
  3. To make the event enjoyable for all and have some fun

We would therefore like to point out at if you are a seasoned track day specialist, or have attended more than one of our Skills Days and found yourself wanting to, or able to travel at speeds which are obviously greater than most of the other attendees, then our 2009 events are not going to meet your expectations. We have decided to concentrate our package on people who want to develop road skills and confidence. Recognising that there are more than 100 people who have attended at least one of our previous Skills Days and that our standard Skills Day training has improved everyone’s circuit skills and even whetted the appetite of a number of people for more race style training, we have made arrangements with HotTrax (www.hottrax.co.uk) as a route for you to advance your circuit riding. We recognise that this is actually limiting the number of people who we can offer our package to, but feel that Skills Days are totally in keeping with our overall aims and objectives. Whilst riding fast on circuits is great fun there are organisations who deliver this type of training better than we ever could. Hence our arrangement with HotTrax

We debated the merits of changing our format to full day sessions with a 20 minutes on and 40 minutes off arrangement so that we could cater for all levels of ability. On balance we felt that sticking with our current format, concentrating on Skills training and having an arrangement with HotTrax gives us the best offering for 2009 – we will obviously re-evaluate again ahead of the 2010 season.

The cost to you for the April event is £120. In the event that we are oversubscribed, you will be entered and held on a reserve list. If you cancel your place we will endeavour to find a replacement from the reserve list. However we need to point out that this may not be possible and the nearer to the date of the event, the more difficult it will be for us to find a replacement. We run these events as close as possible to break-even from a financial perspective so we cannot guarantee you a refund or even a place at a future event.

The skills day has been planned to attract riders who want to improve their road riding skills. The venue has been chosen because of the variety of conditions available and because it offers us an extremely controlled environment free from many of the usual hazards and challenges we encounter on the road. Riders are split into groups of no more than 5 and each group will have a dedicated instructor for the duration of the event. The instructors will deliver a set of core competencies for rider development. In order to achieve this effectively we will run two Sessions during the day - a morning session and an afternoon session – see below for precise details. It is an ideal package for riders who have never before ridden at this type of venue, whilst it also offers ongoing improvement opportunities for those who do have previous experience.

The advantage of this approach being that it will provide riders more open circuit time. We’ve structured the sessions to allow up to three and a half hours effective time on circuit. The alternative approach where everyone attends for the whole day and is split into groups with 20 minute circuit slots only allows for seven twenty minute sessions, or 2 hours 20 minutes circuit time. Our experience of our approach is that as a result of the continued and dedicated training input, this is a far more effective method of improving rider ability. Feedback from delegates at previous events of this nature support the theory.

You will be required to sign a ‘Disclaimer’ before being allowed to participate in the event – this is normal practice and part of the regulations imposed on us.

If you want to take part on the day please complete form (click here) as accurately and honestly as possible. Then return it with a cheque for £120 made payable to ‘The IAM’ to either:

DETAILS OF THE EVENT

Mallory Park is located at Kirkby Mallory in Leicestershire. Further detailed information about the circuit can be found on the web at www.mallorypark.co.uk

MORNING SESSION

Participants for the morning session should arrive between 7.30hrs and 8.00hrs and proceed through the paddock gate entrance and follow the circuit in an anti-clockwise direction to the centre of the circuit.

Registration will run from 08.00 to 08.30. The compulsory pre-event briefing will commence no later than 08.40 so that you are prepared for your circuit time to commence at 09.00 prompt. Anyone arriving late will have to attend a personal briefing that will delay the start of their day and obviously limit their training time.

The Morning session which ends at 12.30 will be followed by a compulsory de-brief. You are then free to leave the circuit, but if you wish to stay and watch some of the afternoon session you will be required to park your machine on the outside of the circuit. Due to the layout of the circuit failure to do this will mean you are unable to leave the circuit before completion of the afternoon session

AFTERNOON SESSION

Afternoon session attendees may arrive any time during the morning and are welcome to watch the morning session and use the refreshment facilities. You need to assemble at the paddock gate entrance ready to gain access to the paddock at 12.30 prompt. You will be escorted to the paddock where registration will take place. Your compulsory pre-event briefing will commence no later than 13.10 so that you are ready for your circuit time to commence at 13.30 prompt. As with the morning session, any latecomers will have to go through the compulsory briefing prior to being allowed to participate in the event. The afternoon session will end at 17.00 followed by a de-brief prior to departure.

COMPULSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • All Participants must hold and produce a current driving licence for the vehicle they intend to ride.

  • Every effort will be made to group participants with riders of similar ability in order that slower riders will not be intimidated and faster riders will not be restricted. Movement between groups will be permitted where imbalance is detected. It is therefore important that you complete the attached questionnaire as accurately and honestly as possible

FUEL

Fuel is available at the circuit at a slightly higher rate than garage forecourts and on a cash-only basis

GROUPING INFORMATION and FINAL REMINDER

The success and enjoyment of a rider skills day is greatly enhanced by all participants riding with people of similar ability. It can be boring to be the fastest in the group and intimidating to be the slowest so the application form is an attempt to grade like with like in your group – therefore please answer truthfully.
